What Is Xanax Detox?

Xanax detox is a short-term program that offers professional oversight, medical interventions, and therapeutic support to help people get through withdrawal safely and more comfortably.

Xanax is the brand name of a prescription medication that is commonly used to treat anxiety disorders. The primary active ingredient in Xanax is alprazolam, which is a benzodiazepine.

While this medication can be quite beneficial when used as directed for a limited time, it does pose a risk of addiction. A person’s risk of becoming addicted to Xanax can increase if they misuse the drug, either in an attempt to self-medicate or to achieve a recreational high.

Regardless of the circumstances that cause a person to develop Xanax addiction, the distress of withdrawal can keep them trapped in the self-destructive cycle of compulsive Xanax use. For people who have been impacted in this way, enrolling in a Xanax detox program can be a vital first step toward a healthier future in recovery.

Xanax Withdrawal Timeline

Just about every aspect of Xanax withdrawal – including the type, severity, and duration of a person’s symptoms – can vary depending on factors such as the individual’s age, their history of Xanax use, if they’ve been through withdrawal before, and if they have any medical or mental health concerns.

In general, though, Xanax withdrawal often follows a three-phase timeline.

Phase one is often referred to as early or immediate withdrawal. This phase is characterized by the onset of symptoms:

  • Xanax is a short-acting benzodiazepine, so withdrawal symptoms can begin to occur quickly. Most people will experience their first symptoms within 12 hours after they stop taking the drug.
  • If a person had been using withdrawal to treat anxiety, panic, or another mental health concern, those symptoms may also begin to resurface during the early phase.

Phase two is known as acute withdrawal:

  • Over the next three to five days, the scope and severity of a person’s symptoms may steadily increase.
  • Usually, symptoms will peak around five days after a person’s most recent Xanax use, then begin to slowly subside.
  • For some people, it takes a week or more before the most disruptive symptoms have dissipated. For others, it can take a month or longer before they feel like they’re back to 100%.

Phase three may be called extended withdrawal, protracted withdrawal, or post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS). Not everyone goes through this phase, but for those who do:

  • Symptoms can persist for several months, in some cases lasting a year or longer.
  • During the protracted phase of Xanax withdrawal, symptoms may come and go, or vary in intensity. This unpredictability can add to the emotional distress of the experience.
  • Symptoms of protracted withdrawal can include anxiety, insomnia, disrupted focus, memory problems, appetite loss, and increased sensitivity to external stimuli

The Dangers of Cold Turkey Xanax Detox

“Cold turkey” is an informal term that describes the sudden cessation of drug use, typically with little to no assistance.

Though it can be tempting to think of going cold turkey as ripping off the bandage (enduring a brief period of intense distress instead of sustained suffering), that’s not what usually happens. Instead, trying to abruptly quit Xanax and go through withdrawal on your own can make it far more difficult to stop using this dangerous drug.

When you’re at home, you likely either have Xanax on hand or know where you can get some. So when your symptoms intensify, it can be extremely tempting to take a pill to make the pain go away, which puts you right back into the self-defeating cycle of active Xanax use.

Also, some symptoms of Xanax abuse can endanger your health or even threaten your life. For example, vomiting, diarrhea, and appetite loss can lead to dehydration, which can have a devastating impact. Seizures can cause considerable physical harm, and in severe cases can be fatal. And the psychological impact of Xanax withdrawal can include suicidal thoughts.

When you choose to start your recovery efforts in a reputable Xanax detox program, your risk of harm decreases substantially while your likelihood of success rises significantly.
