Understanding Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex medical condition—not a moral failing or lack of willpower—characterized by compulsive substance use despite devastating consequences.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), SUD exists on a spectrum from mild to severe, with diagnosis based on meeting specific clinical criteria within a 12-month period.

Signs and Symptoms of Substance Use Disorder

You might recognize these patterns in your own life:

Loss of Control:

  • You use more than you intended, promising yourself “just one drink” or “just this once,” but find yourself unable to stop
  • You’ve tried to cut back or quit multiple times, but the cravings always pull you back
  • You think about using constantly—planning when you’ll use next, making sure you have enough, hiding your supply

Life Falling Apart:

  • You’re missing work, calling in sick, or barely getting through the day without using
  • Your relationships are suffering—arguments with family, pulling away from friends who don’t use, lying to the people you love
  • You’ve given up hobbies, activities, or goals that once mattered to you because substance use has become your main priority
  • You’re using in dangerous situations—driving under the influence, mixing substances, using alone

Physical and Mental Toll:

  • You need more of the substance to feel the same effects (tolerance)
  • You experience withdrawal symptoms—shaking, sweating, anxiety, nausea, or worse—when you try to stop
  • You continue using despite knowing it’s causing or worsening health problems, depression, anxiety, or paranoia
  • You’re using just to feel “normal” or to avoid withdrawal, not even to get high anymore

The Neurological Reality: Why You Can’t “Just Stop”

Here’s what most people don’t understand about addiction: it’s not about weakness. Substance use disorder fundamentally rewires your brain.

Repeated substance use hijacks your brain’s reward system, flooding it with dopamine and creating powerful neural pathways that associate substance use with survival-level urgency. Your brain begins to prioritize drugs or alcohol above food, relationships, and safety. Meanwhile, the areas responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and judgment become impaired.

What to Expect During Arkansas Addiction Treatment

Starting treatment can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve never been through it before.

You might be wondering what your days will look like, whether you’ll be comfortable, or if you can actually handle this.

We believe that knowing what to expect can ease some of that anxiety.

Assessment

When you first arrive, our clinical team conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand your unique needs.

We’ll review your substance use history, assess your physical and mental health, and learn about your story—your relationships, previous treatment attempts, and what brought you here. This isn’t about judgment; it’s about creating a personalized treatment plan that actually works for your life.

Detox: Safe Medical Support Through Withdrawal

If you’re entering detox, the first 3-7 days focus entirely on safely managing withdrawal symptoms.

You’ll receive 24/7 medical monitoring, FDA-approved medications to ease discomfort, nutritious meals, and plenty of rest.

Our team has guided hundreds of people through this process, you won’t be alone, and we know how to keep you safe and as comfortable as possible.

Residential Treatment: Structure, Therapy, and Healing

Your days in residential treatment are structured around healing.

You’ll participate in individual therapy to explore the root causes of your addiction, group therapy to connect with peers who understand your struggle, and evidence-based treatments like CBT, DBT, and trauma-focused therapy. You’ll also learn practical skills—relapse prevention, stress management, communication, and life skills—that prepare you for sustained recovery. Between therapy sessions, you’ll have time for experiential activities like art or music therapy, fitness, reflection, and building connections with others in recovery.

The Emotional Journey

Treatment brings up a lot of emotions—relief at finally getting help, fear about what’s ahead, sadness about what addiction has cost you, and eventually, hope that life can be different. Our clinical team supports you through all of it. Recovery isn’t about being perfect; it’s about showing up, being honest, and doing the work. As you near the end of treatment, we’ll create a detailed aftercare plan to ensure you have ongoing support, resources, and a clear path forward.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

You’ll be surrounded by people who have dedicated their careers to helping people just like you find recovery. You’ll meet peers who understand because they’re living it too. And you’ll discover strengths you didn’t know you had. Recovery is possible, and we’re here to walk beside you through every step of the journey.

How Is Substance Use Disorder Treated?

Effective addiction treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all—it’s personalized based on your unique needs, circumstances, and goals.

The specifics of your treatment plan will be influenced by several factors, including:

  • Your age and overall health
  • The substance(s) you’re using and how long you’ve been struggling with addiction
  • The amount and frequency of your substance use
  • How addiction has affected your life—relationships, work, physical health, mental health
  • Whether you have co-occurring medical or mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or chronic pain

At Time Wellness, we use a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that combines three core treatment components: psychotherapy, medications, and holistic therapies.

Together, these elements address the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of addiction, giving you the best chance at lasting recovery.

Psychotherapy: Addressing the Root Causes

Therapy is the foundation of addiction treatment.

While detox addresses the physical dependence, psychotherapy helps you understand why you started using in the first place and gives you the tools to build a life without substances.

Our therapeutic approach includes:

Individual Psychotherapy: One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist where you explore the underlying causes of your addiction—trauma, unresolved pain, relationship issues, or mental health conditions. This is your safe space to process difficult emotions, work through personal challenges, and set meaningful recovery goals.

Group Therapy: Connecting with peers who understand what you’re going through. In group sessions, you’ll share experiences, learn from others’ journeys, practice communication and boundary-setting skills, and realize you’re not alone in this struggle.

Family Therapy: Addiction affects the whole family. Family therapy helps repair damaged relationships, improve communication, educate loved ones about addiction, and build a supportive home environment for your recovery.

Evidence-Based Therapeutic Modalities:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to substance use
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Building skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Processing traumatic memories that fuel addiction
  • Trauma-Focused Therapy: Addressing childhood trauma, PTSD, and adverse experiences that underlie substance use
  • Motivational Interviewing: Strengthening your internal motivation and commitment to change
  • Life Skills and Relapse Prevention: Learning practical strategies to identify triggers, manage cravings, handle high-risk situations, and navigate life’s stresses without turning to substances.

Medications: Supporting Your Brain’s Healing

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is not “replacing one drug with another”—it’s using FDA-approved medications to support your brain’s healing, reduce cravings, prevent relapse, and give you the stability you need to engage fully in therapy and recovery.

For Alcohol and Opioid Withdrawal:

  • Buprenorphine (Suboxone): Reduces opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing a euphoric high, allowing you to focus on recovery
  • Methadone: Long-acting opioid agonist that prevents withdrawal and reduces cravings for individuals with severe opioid use disorder
  • Naltrexone (Vivitrol): Blocks the euphoric effects of opioids and alcohol, reducing the reward if you do use

For Managing Withdrawal Symptoms: During detox, we use medications to ease uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms—medications for nausea, anxiety, sleep disturbances, muscle aches, and seizure prevention (particularly important for alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal).

For Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions: If you’re struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or other mental health conditions alongside addiction, psychiatric medications can be essential for stabilizing your mood, managing symptoms, and supporting your overall recovery. Our medical team provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management.

Medication is one tool in your recovery toolkit—combined with therapy and holistic support, it addresses the neurological changes caused by addiction and gives your brain the support it needs to heal.

Holistic Therapies: Healing Mind, Body, and Spirit

Holistic therapies complement traditional treatment by addressing the whole person and helping you discover healthy ways to cope, connect, and find peace.

Our holistic programming includes:

Mind-Body Therapies:

  • Yoga, Mindfulness, and Meditation: Learning to calm your nervous system, stay present, and manage stress without substances
  • Biofeedback Therapy: Using real-time monitoring of physiological responses to teach you how to control stress, anxiety, and cravings
  • Biosound Therapy: Combining therapeutic sound frequencies with guided visualization to promote deep relaxation and emotional processing

Creative and Expressive Therapies:

  • Art Therapy: Expressing emotions and processing trauma through creative outlets when words aren’t enough
  • Music Therapy: Using music to explore feelings, reduce anxiety, and connect with parts of yourself that addiction may have silenced

Physical Wellness:

  • Red Light Therapy: Promoting cellular healing, reducing inflammation, and supporting physical recovery from substance use
  • Fitness and Recreation: Rebuilding physical health, releasing endorphins naturally, and discovering activities that bring you joy
  • Nutrition Counseling: Restoring your body’s nutritional balance and learning how diet affects mood, energy, and cravings

Skills Development: Beyond therapy sessions, you’ll participate in practical workshops that teach essential life skills—communication, conflict resolution, financial management, time management, and daily routines that support long-term sobriety.

Holistic therapies aren’t just “extras”—they’re essential components of comprehensive treatment that help you reconnect with yourself, reduce stress in healthy ways, and build a balanced life that supports lasting recovery.

How Do I Know What Program is Most Appropriate for Me?

When you choose Time Wellness Detox, you will complete an intake evaluation before you begin treatment. The person who conducts your evaluation will use that information to recommend the program or programs that are most appropriate for you. Ultimately, the choice will be yours – but we’ll work closely with you to ensure you have the guidance you need to make the most informed decision.

Does Insurance Cover Treatment?
